My sister, Diana, has agreed to contribute a few posts here are there about her fantastic cooking and homemade remedies. Tonight, she has provided the ingredients for a wonderful salt scrub. Given that winter is upon us, and the moisture is being stripped from our skin as we speak (the skin on my knuckles has been cracking all week, yikes), this is a fantastic remedy for your body. Check it out!

Homemade Organic Hand Scrub
The Sitch
You’re cooking a lot, it’s wintertime, and you have scaly
lizard hands. Very attractive. The cure? Make your own all-natural, organic,
and “zinfully” easy hand scrub! This is
a fail-proof recipe that takes just a moment to prepare. Better yet, if packaged in mini mason jars
and adorned with a fabric ribbon, you can make a quick hostess gift that will
be a lot more memorable than a bottle of Yellow Tail Merlot!
Notes:
I prefer grape seed oil as I always have it on hand for
salads (and the occasional Red Velvet Cake).
You may choose to use olive oil, but try to avoid from processed
vegetable oils. The choice of salt is
very important: you need to use a coarse grey sea salt (preferably Celtic
sea salt), which has a natural moisture level that is key to the success of
this recipe. (Do yourself a favor and buy a 5lb bag of it. Split it among your
four favorite cooks. It’s far more
nutritious for you than processed salts, and is perfect for flavoring broths
and your cooking. I’m sure Liz will
write an ode to Celtic Sea salt soon.) Please note that using a processed salt
like Morton’s or kosher salt will not produce the desired
results.
Ingredients
·
¼ cup Celtic Sea Salt (coarse grain)
·
¼ cup Organic Granulated Sugar (I used cane
sugar)
·
1 ounce Organic Grape seed Oil
·
Optional: ½ tsp. extract/scented oil of your choice
(I used Simply Organic Peppermint Flavor)
Instructions:
Place the salt and sugar into a small mixing bowl. Combine with a mini spatula or a fork. Slowly pour in the grape seed oil, adding to
desired consistency. (You may find that 1 ounce is too oily for your needs.
Start with half an ounce of oil, and go slowly from there).
Add in the scent of your choice. For this batch, I used organic peppermint
oil, so that I can use this scrub after chopping garlic or onions.
Transfer the mixture to a small glass container with an
airtight lid. I use a 1-cup Pyrex glass container for this purpose.
To use:
Scoop 1-2 tbsp. of the scrub into your hands using a spoon
(you want to minimize contamination of your scrub, always use a fresh
spoon!). “Scrub” the mixture into your
hands using your fingers, making sure to get the nooks and crannies between
your knuckles, under your fingernails and the tops of your hands. If you’re feeling particularly flexible or
motivated, this scrub does wonders for elbows and knees, too!
Rinse with warm water (not hot—or else you’ll undo all the
moisturizing you’ve just accomplished!) Pat your hands dry with paper towels
(or a reusable kitchen towel that you don’t mind getting a bit oily.)
Depending on how much grape seed oil you added, your hands
may or may not be a bit “greasy” at this point. Let your hands soak up the oil
for about five minutes before trying to use technology (iPads, smart phones or
keyboards). Enjoy your new baby soft skin!
Hint:
Place the closed dish near your sink, and make sure to use
it frequently during the harsh winter months!

Well, doesn't that sound like one hell of a hand scrub!
That definitely sounds
like a great and easy gift to make for upcoming birthdays or even a
"Just because it's Wednesday" gift for a friend that needs a quick
pick-me-up. I recently bought a few bottles of essential oil (post
coming soon) and this scrub would easily work with most of the scents
that I picked.
I will have to look into this recipe myself and try out some new ideas!
